Overview

CrateDB is an Austrian distributed SQL database designed for machine data, time-series workloads, and real-time analytics at scale. Founded in 2013 in Dornbirn, Austria, Crate.io built CrateDB to combine the familiarity of SQL with the scalability of a distributed NoSQL architecture, making it especially popular for industrial IoT, smart infrastructure, and logistics applications where massive volumes of sensor and machine data must be ingested and queried in real time.

The database supports standard SQL with extensions for full-text search, geospatial queries, and nested JSON documents, while offering PostgreSQL wire protocol compatibility for easy integration with existing tools and drivers. CrateDB's shared-nothing architecture distributes data across nodes automatically, enabling horizontal scaling without manual sharding. It is available as CrateDB Cloud, a fully managed service, or as a self-hosted open source deployment, giving organizations flexibility over their infrastructure choices.

Headquartered in Dornbirn, Austria, Crate.io serves enterprise customers across manufacturing, energy, and logistics sectors throughout Europe and globally. CrateDB Cloud operates from data centers in Austria, Germany, and across the EU, ensuring full GDPR compliance and European data sovereignty. As an open source project with its source code on GitHub, CrateDB offers a transparent, vendor lock-in-free alternative to US-based database platforms for organizations managing large-scale analytical and IoT workloads.
