Overview
Strapi is an open source headless content management system (CMS) founded in 2015 in Paris, France, by Aurelien Georget and Pierre Burgy. As a headless CMS, Strapi decouples the content management backend from the frontend presentation layer, allowing developers to deliver content to any device or platform through RESTful or GraphQL APIs. Built with Node.js, Strapi has become one of the most popular open source CMS projects in the world.
The platform provides a customizable admin panel for content editors, a flexible content-type builder that lets developers define custom data structures without writing code, media library management, role-based access control, internationalization (i18n) support, draft and publish workflows, and a plugin system for extending functionality. Strapi supports multiple databases including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQLite, and can be deployed anywhere from a simple VPS to Kubernetes clusters.
Strapi is used by tens of thousands of developers and organizations worldwide, from startups building their first website to enterprises managing content across multiple channels. The project has over 60,000 GitHub stars and a vibrant community of contributors. Strapi Cloud, the managed hosting option, runs on European infrastructure, making it an attractive choice for EU-based teams that want a modern, API-first CMS with full data sovereignty. The MIT license ensures there are no restrictions on commercial use.
