Overview
Wire is an end-to-end encrypted messaging, voice, and video collaboration platform founded in 2014 and headquartered in Zug, Switzerland. Created by a team of former Skype engineers, Wire was built from the ground up with security and privacy as core design principles. The platform uses the Proteus protocol (based on Signal's Double Ratchet algorithm) to ensure all communications are encrypted end-to-end, including messages, calls, file sharing, and screen sharing.
Wire offers one-to-one and group messaging, voice and video calls (including group video with up to 12 participants), file sharing, screen sharing, guest rooms for external collaboration, and support for ephemeral (self-deleting) messages. The platform is available on all major platforms including web, desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux), and mobile (iOS, Android). Wire also provides an API for building bots and integrations, and supports federation for cross-organization communication.
As a Swiss company with open source clients and server components, Wire operates under Switzerland's strong privacy laws while providing full transparency through its publicly available code. The platform is used by government agencies, defense organizations, and enterprises across Europe that require the highest levels of communication security. Wire has received security audits from independent firms and is one of the few collaboration platforms that combines enterprise features with true end-to-end encryption for all communication channels.
